Learn About Salsa and Merengue Dance
OUT to Dance offers salsa dance classes, merengue dance classes and Latin dance classes at West Roxbury School of Dance;
Salsa is a sexy, funky, fabulous dance that's incredibly popular
world-wide. Salsa music is a fusion of traditional African and
Cuban and other Latin-American rhythms that traveled from the
islands (Cuba and Puerto Rico) to New York during the migration,
somewhere between the 1940s and the 1970s, depending on where
one puts the boundary between "real" salsa and its predecessors.
There is debate as to whether Salsa originated in Cuba or Puerto
Rico, but it definitely picked up stem in New York in the 70's.
Salsa is one of the main dances in both Cuba and Puerto Rico and
is known world-wide, but you don't have to travel farther than
Jamaica Plain to experience its heat!

The simplest and most uptempo of the Latin dances, merengue originated
in the Dominican Republic. It emphasizes a straight-ahead 8-count
rhythm taken with Cuban Motion. Merengue packs the dance floor
in Latin clubs and parties because of its simplicity, playfulness,
and sexiness, and it can be learned more quickly than any other
dance. Also, the merengue can be danced to a wide variety of non-Latin
music including 70's disco, Top 40, and uptempo hip hop.
