About Waltz
Waltz is characterized by its rolling style and romantic flavor. Contemporary waltz music is romantic and elegant; it’s a perennial favorite among ballroom dancers who relish the rise and fall movements of the waltz which create a gentle (or dramatic) rolling swoop around the dance floor.
“Moon River” is a classic example of the waltz rhythm, as are the R’n’B classics “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” and Aretha’s “Natural Woman”. Many more contemporary waltzes are on our students’ list of faves in the column on the right.
History of Waltz
The waltz first became fashionable in Vienna around the 1780s, spreading to many other countries in the years to follow. The waltz, and especially its closed dance position, became the example for the creation of many other ballroom dances. Subsequently, new types of waltz have developed, including many folk and several ballroom dances, as well as country waltz.
